Newburyport District Court

The Newburyport District Court serves the northeastern corner of Essex County, from the coast to the New Hampshire line, and its docket carries the seasonal cases the beaches and the Route 1 corridor produce alongside the year-round calendar. The Essex County District Attorney’s Office prosecutes here, and Attorney Joe Serpa has defended across Essex County for thirty years.

Many cases in this court are resolved long before trial. Knowing how a Massachusetts criminal case can be dismissed is often the first step toward the best result.

Location and Access. The Newburyport District Court, 188 State St., Newburyport, MA 01950, is accessible from the Newburyport commuter rail line. The court’s phone is (978) 462-2652.

Communities Served. Amesbury, Merrimac, Newbury, Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury, and West Newbury.

OUI, Seasonal, and Border Cases. Salisbury Beach, the Route 1 corridor, and the New Hampshire border feed a seasonal OUI, disorderly, and assault docket, much of it against summer visitors whose cases can often be handled with counsel appearing; the four-day citation rule governs the cases that begin without an arrest.

Domestic Violence, Drug, and the Clerk Session. The court runs domestic violence and 209A sessions and drug matters, and its clerk-magistrate sessions screen the summons docket, where a denial ends the matter with no record.
